Karen Hodges Miller is once again hosting her Winter Writers Weekend, March 2-4, 2018. This is great event for authors (and aspiring authors) who are looking for better ways to market their books. October 2017

J.R. Bale launched his second novel, Cognition Chronicles: The Redstone Legacy, a science fiction novel. The book explores the concepts of consciousness, identity and the soul through five interconnected stories, each delivering a unique perspective and surprise. It’s available in Kindle and paperback on Amazon.

NOWA participated in the Somerset County BizFest on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Imperia Hotel, 1714 Easton Ave, Somerset, New Jersey 08873. Event hours are 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. and the event is free to attend. Stop by and meet some of our NOWA members and learn more about the services we provide.


December 2015

It is with great sadness, NOWA announces the passing of Robert P. Baker, a longtime Boardmember and treasurer of NOWA. Bob was a talented technical writer, good friend and supportive colleague. He will be missed by all who
knew him.

Bob devoted a considerable amount or his personal time to rescuing Siberian Huskies. In leiu of flowers, the family has asked donations be made in Bob’s name to the SOS-Siberian Rescue Fund.


September 2015

J.R. Bale has written and published Phoenix in the Middle of the Road, a political fiction novel, which follows David Grant, a former businessman coaxed into running for Congress as an Independent. In doing so, Grant enters the challenging and bizarre world of national politics, testing his abilities and straining his moral compass.

October 2014

Copywriter Vivian Fransen and designer J.R. Bale helped reposition and rebrand Durand, a non-profit organization which help individuals with special needs, including autism. This rebranding effort included a brochure and a new logo design.


August 2014

Digi.no, a Norwegian online newspaper covering news within information technology used a stock photo by J.R. Bale to illustrate a story on the NSA’s PRISM project and the effect on cloud computing.


February-March 2014

Karen Hodges Miller of Open Door Publications will be hosting Winter Writers’ Weekend in Lambertville, NJ from February 28 to March 2, 2014. Participants will have the opportunity to meet experts in book marketing and publishing. Melanie Davis, PhD served as a developmental editor for Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 7-9, 2nd ed., by Pam Wilson, MSW. The comprehensive sexuality education curriculum is jointly published by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. She co-authored Sexuality and Our Faith: A Companion to Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 7-9, 2nd ed. by the same publishers.


Karen Hodges Miller’s company, Open Door Publications, recently published Melanie Davis, PhD’s book, Look Within: A Woman’s Journal.

The book provides reflection and writing prompts related to a woman’s sexuality and sense of self. It includes sketches by Paige Davis-Kleppinger and a discussion group/book club guide.

Melanie also wrote a chapter for How I Got Into Sex…, a collection of essays by sexuality educators across the US. The book, available electronically and in print, was published by the Center for Sex Education, Morristown, NJ.

NOWA will once again had a table at the Somerset County Business Partnership Expo at the The Imperia at 1714 Easton Avenue in Somerset,  on June 13th, 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Many attendees showed great interest in both the NOWA organization and the services individual members offered. NOWA will also be raffling off a special prize, including gift certificates for services by NOWA members.


March 2013

J.R. Bale led a program at Caldwell College where members of the local business community and students discussed and analyzed a educational business case he wrote. All enjoyed the interchange of ideas and opinions.


February 2013

Karen Hodges Miller and Open Door Publications LLC held its first Winter Writer’s Retreat on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24. They had 17 enthusiastic participants and six fabulous speakers. Acording to Karen, the energy was high, the information was valuable. Another Writer’s Retreat is being planned for 2014.


September 2011

Karen Hodges Miller, a member of NOWA and owner and publisher of Open Door Publications LLC, recently published her second book for authors, “Finish your book! A Time Management Guide for Writers.” She co-authored the book time management and small business consultant Lorette Pruden, Ph.D. Open Door Publications, which works with both first-time and established authors, will publish 11 books this year on a variety of non-fiction topics. Available on Amazon

NOWA participated in the Rutgers Newark SBDC Small Business Expo & Bazaar which took place at the Rutgers Business School.


Karen Miller’s OpenDoorPublications sponsored a five-speaker seminar event at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal entitled “How to Write, Publish and Market Your Book!”
